About Dr Young Yu

MBBS (Hons) BSc Med FRACP PhD
General & Interventional Cardiologist

Dr Young Yu explains why he became a cardiologist.

What Makes Me Tick

When I was young, my father unexpectedly became very unwell. Ultimately it was a story of beating cancer, but the experience also shaped my view of doctors, who are lucky enough to change people’s lives and give them hope.

From an early age, I was motivated to pursue a career in Medicine.

After completing a medical degree from UNSW in 2003, graduating with a Class 1 Honours, I undertook my Cardiology training at St. George and Prince of Wales Hospital. I then moved to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the Heart Research Institute, where I completed a demanding PhD in Translational Medicine, funded by the National Heart Foundation.

My research, aligned with my goal to treat Cardiovascular Disease, developing a coating to render surfaces resistant to clotting, an important property for devices in contact with blood.

Following my PhD I travelled overseas for a highly competitive Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology (the minimal invasive treatment of Coronary Artery Disease with stents) at the prestigious Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. Here, I worked with world leaders in the field, and honed my skills in complex and challenging stenting cases.

I returned to Sydney in 2015 to put my skills and knowledge into practice in both the public and private arenas.

So, should you ever need hospital level care at a public hospital, I am a Visiting Medical Officer at St George Public hospital, , so you can ask to be looked after by me. I’m also accredited to provide care at the Strathfield Private Hospital and Hurstville Private Hospital, and St George Private Hospital

My consultation rooms are at the South Sydney Cardiology, Hurstville, and The Cardiac Center, Shellharbour. Increasingly, patients from ‘out of area’ find me via word of mouth or the internet to seek an additional opinion.

As a senior clinical lecturer at the University of Sydney I am also involved in teaching, research and shaping the minds of the future generation of doctors.
